How to celebrate eco-friendly Dussehra?

How to celebrate eco-friendly Dussehra?

Dussehra is a traditional Indian festival that culminates the nine long days of Navratri. It signifies the victory of good over evil when the effigies of Ravana are burnt. Burning the Ravana idols leads to air pollution. The toxic chemicals used for preparing idols get submerged with water. Additionally, burning produces harmful gases and poses a threat to humans as well as aquatic life.

Make the Dussehra celebration happier by taking good care of your surroundings. Here is a list of ideas to celebrate eco-friendly Dussehra this year.

Use Eco-Friendly Idols

Avoid idols made of plaster of Paris or plastic. They pollute the water and do not dissolve easily. Use eco-friendly clay idols for puja and take a step towards responsible Dussehra celebration.

Avoid Firecrackers

Burning firecrackers cause environmental pollution. When the effigies of Ravana are burnt, they release harmful smoke that pollutes the air. Avoid using firecrackers to keep our environment safe. This will also help in reducing noise pollution.

Use Organic Colours or Paints

Use natural colours to paint idols. The chemical paints pollute the environment and the water.  Only buy the idols painted with natural colours or dyes made from flowers or other eco-friendly products.

Energy Saving Lightings

During Dussehra, people decorate homes and venues with different coloured lights which consume a lot of electricity. Use CFL bulbs or energy-saving electrical products. Try to use candles or diyas instead of electric lights that look more traditional and beautiful.

Use Flowers & Plants for Decoration

Eco-friendly decoration for Dussehra has slowly gained importance over the years. Spruce up your home with attractive flower decoration. Decorate with eco-friendly idols and décor elements. Use traditional earthen lamps and potted plants to make your home festive ready.

Refrain from Noise Pollution

Avoid loudspeakers or noisy DJ’s for the festive celebration. The loudspeakers used in religious performances and social occasions create noise pollution and bother people. Use low sound music instruments, if you have to.

Keep Dussehra celebration clean and simple. Take care of small things that otherwise go unnoticed. Have a great time celebrating this Dussehra in an eco-friendly way.
