Raksha Bandhan is a term from the Hindi language which means a relationship or an association based on protection. It is commonly known as Rakhi. This Indian festival symbolizes the sacred bond of love between a brother and sister. Raksha Bandhan signifies the festival of a knot of protection where raksha means protection and bandhan means bond. Here the meaning of protection defines not only physical, but also spiritual.
As many other Indian festivals Rakhi also has a rich Indian mythological base. It had come into origin about 6000 years back when Aryan created first civilization- the Indus valley civilization. There are some historical evidences of rakhi which date back even earlier: - Lord Krishna and Draupadi, Rani Karnawati and emperor Humanyun, Alexander the Great and King Puru, King Bali and Goddess Laxmi. All these epics say about sacred relation of Brother& Sister.
It is celebrated on the full moon of the month of shraavana as shravana purnima. While it is celebrated all over the country in different ways with different names, but they happen to fall on the same day like as in north India it is known as Rakhi Purnima, Naryali Purnima in western parts of India in Uttarakhand as Janyo Punyo etc. Hence, it signifies only and only one meaning that it is the sacred bond of love between brother and sister.
