In India, teacher’s day also known as Shikshak Divas is celebrated on September 5th. It is a day when we pay tribute to the contribution made by the teachers to the society, for their hard work all year long to educate a child. It is celebrated on the birthday of second President of India, academic philosopher Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan. He was a staunch believer & ardent supporter of the education system. He was a philosopher, a scholar, a diplomat, President of India and above all… a teacher.
When he became President, some of his students and friends requested him to allow them to celebrate his birthday, 5 September. He replied, “Instead of celebrating my birthday, it would be my proud privilege if 5th September is observed as Teacher’s day.” From that day onward, Dr. Radhakrishnan’s birthday is commemorated as Teacher's Day. On this day, we gratefully remember the great educationist, apart from honoring the efforts of all the teachers that have made our life much more knowledgeable and fulfilled, serving as our guiding light. And we treat our teachers by sending them flowers, gifts, cakes, goodluck plants, lucky bamboo etc. Students send congratulation flowers to their favorite teachers on this important occasion. They can buy flowers & have flowers delivered at their doorstep. They can pamper their teachers by gifting them frest cut flowers from the local florist or by buying fresh flowers online through online flowers shop. Putting flowers in glass vase on your teachers desk would make them feel happy and cheerful throughout the day.
Apart from the enjoyment part of the day, it is also a day when one can look back, admire and get inspired by Dr. Radhakrishnan, a small town boy, who grew up to become one of the most respected politicians in the history of India. Since times immemorial, Indians have respected and idolized their teachers. Earlier, we used to call our teachers 'Guru' and now it's the contemporary 'Sir' or 'Madam'. Nevertheless, the role of teachers has remained the same. They were, are and will continue to be our hope, always creating conditions for our growth & overall development. We will always be thankful to them for their constructive support. It is as an expression of this gratitude only that we celebrate Teacher's Day in India on Dr. Radhakrishnan’s birthday as a mark of respect to this phenomenal teacher. Also, beautiful flowers and petals have always been an important part of the Teacher’s day since very beginning. Earlier students would send birthday gifts and birthday flower bouquet. And we send flowers today as well. Roses delivery is one of the most common way of showing our affection.
A teacher’s profession is a profession that makes any other profession. Let us all treasure our very important day by keeping it alive in the hearts of all by celebrating it with sweets & housewarming flowers. |
