     Taash parties up the stakes

parties with mega bucks have turned more grand this year. As Diwali draws closer, pre-Diwali card parties hosted by the seriously rich are the talk of the town. Stakes shooting up to `15 lakhs and much, much more don’t raise brows. Hi-end décor is embracing exotic themes. Lavish dinners are turning cordon bleu. And the city’s glitterati are all geared up to attend the biggest and hottest card parties thrown by industrialists and business honchos.

Nishant Arora and Vishali Kumari, owner of Kohinoor Foods, have planned a lounge party on October 24 with a Moroccan theme at their farmhouse near Garden Of Five Senses. With a budget of `7 lakh onwards, they are inviting around 250 people, primarily focussing on poker fun. “Poker is the latest craze at card parties, so we have a bigger stake for that. We have set up small kabanas and big centrestage canopy to give it a Moroccan look. The stakes depend on the individual’s choice.”

The spotlight is on cards, but the backdrop of decor is of utmost importance to the hostess with the mostest. People are spending lavishly on décor to make the party a grand affair. According to Ferns and Petals, event planners and decorators, this year’s most expensive card parties have earmarked expenditure of approximately `50 lakhs (a 20 per cent jump from last year). Says Lalita Raghav, vice president, FnP, “Card parties have become the most lavish occasion for people in the metros to celebrate the festive season. As compared to last year, the spending has gone up from `8 lakhs to `15 lakhs. This year’s bashes focus more on classy and grand decor with stylish card den look. There is a huge demand for exotic flower decorations including Liliums and Protea in special cuts and styles.”

Many are planning a small but lavish affair at private farmhouses. Delhi-based businessman Arvinder Singh, who is famous for his Diwali bashes in town, has planned a bigger bash at one of his farmhouses in Punjab. “This time it’s a private affair and entry free starts from `2.5 lakhs. The stakes start from that to no-limit table. This time we have invited 75 close friends and family guests. Although the parties have already begun, the grand ones will start from October 23, and continue till Diwali,” he says.

Seconds Ankur Pasari of travel and packaging business, who organised a grand card party with performances by jazz players, percussionists. This time he has planned a private party with a budget of `15 lakhs onwards. “This time, I’ve only invited 100 people. There is an increase in card parties in the city. I already have invitations for three in a single day.”

Besides the traditional flash card parties, blackjack or derby, poker parties are gaining favour. While Manish Dutt, managing director of Kastros cigar, will be hosting Cigar and Poker nights on the Sunday before Diwali, Vishal Lohia, executive director, Indo Rama synthetics, is hosting a poker party at his farmhouse in Chhattarpur.

Indian e-retailers follow gaints like eBay and Amazon, tie-up with BPOs

BANGALORE: Two days before Valentine's Day in 2008, the online payment mechanism of gifting solutions companyFerns N Petals crashed. Pawan Gadia, who heads the company's e-commerce division, was in for a tough time since the run-up to Valentine's Day is one of the peak business periods for the firm.

"If users were not able to buy online, business was surely going to take a hit," recalls Gadia. In a desperate attempt to salvage a part of the online business, he and his small team of about 15 people began calling up customers. He was able to tackle the crisis but vowed never to let the situation recur and resolved to set up a call centre.

'The idea behind FNP Academy is to promote the art of floral designing for different sets of consumers'

India's branded and perhaps one of the first organised flower retail chains--Ferns N Petals started out in 1994 with a small outlet in Delhi and has now grown to over 110 stores in the country and abroad (through franchise model) with an annual turnover of Rs 100 crore. Ferns N Petals recently launched a training academy to create a platform for potential and aspiring Indian florists to learn the ways of the business. Pravda Godbole spoke to Vikaas Gutgutia, co-founder and managing director, Ferns N Petals.Edited excerpts.

What is the thought behind finding a florist academy?
The idea behind the foundation of FNP Academy is to promote the art of floral designing for different sets of consumers. They could include an amateur who wants to try it as a hobby or aspiring professionals who want to take this up as a vocation or housewives who would simply be interested on learning the art of flower designing and decoration. Through the academy we would want to spread the culture by training students on premium designing and creativity. One of the most important reasons behind this initiative is to train the manpower according to the FNP standards. FNP Academy would be a platform which would promotes upscale products and train florists with international designs required to create premium products.

Which foreign associations have you tied up with for the same?
We have tied up with Lee Flower Design Academy from Malaysia.

What kind of a skill set will be imparted through these training schools?
The FNP Academy offers three courses: one for aspiring florists, which is an advanced level course for to-be professionals, the next one is for amateurs, that is a hobby course and the last one is for homemakers who are keen on learning the art of flower decoration.

Can you tell us in detail about your product line?
We offer premium flower deliver-ables for daily and occasional gifting. We offer a product line comprising of six different verticals: retail and franchising, weddings and events, wholesale, Tahiliani, gardens and e-commerce. FNP started its online gifting portal in 2002 that offers an exclusive variety of flowers brought in from myriad parts of the country and abroad for delivery at the customers' doorstep across the country and in 99 different countries abroad.

What are your product verticals Tahiliani and gardens all about?
FNP is in association with designer Tarun Tahiliani, who designs the complete range of FNP Tahiliani which is a premium collection of flower decoration and gifting. The garden division of FNP offers a wide array of authorised garden farms (Brij Gardens and Kundan farms) for large gatherings ranging from parties, weddings, fashion shows and corporate events. FNP wholesale manages the excess inventory including imported as well domestic flowers, by selling them in the wholesale market. Each division is interlinked to each other to complement its allied activities.

Are you planning to get into flower cultivation business?
We already have a successful wholesale business going and yes we are planning to turn into growers by the end of this year in order to complement our already existing whole sale business and to meet the requirements of our varied business verticals including retail, weddings etc. We have identified and finalised land near Hosur for flower growing and cultivation.

What will be the production capacity for the flower cultivation vertical?
We are targeting a number of 5 million stems per year with export markets as Holland and Russia.

Will you be supplying anywhere in the country and how will it compliment your current offering of flower gifting?
Our plan is to sell the surplus output in the open market. It will definitely fuel the requirement of flowers in categories like rose and incarnation and it will also reduce our dependence on farms and distributors supplying flowers to FNP. However we would continue to import exotic flowers.

Indian E-Commerce Players Will Innovate To Overcome Challenges & Scale

The third edition of the VCCircle E-Commerce Forum, co-hosted by Techcircle.in, saw a flood of 400 participants from the entire e-commerce ecosystem including entrepreneurs, investors as well as executives from offline retail firms congregating to discuss the new e-commerce categories, offline plays, infrastructure challenges for a status check on the industry.

Speaking at the keynote, Ajit Balakrishnan, Founder of Rediff.com India said, “I wish there were 100,000 e-commerce firms – that way we would have 50-100 e-commerce sites that were great. It is fantastic to have irrational and rational exuberance.” He also talked about the mosaic of institutional drivers such as backhaul connectivity, credit card population, capital gain issues and legal issues in the ecosystem.

The opening panel titled ‘The Indian E-Commerce: A Status Check & Where Are We Headed’ was moderated by Manik Arora, MD, IDG Ventures India and had HomeShop 18, Infibeam and e-Bay India as participants. Arora began the discussion by stating that India has already witnessed venture capital investments in excess of $500 million this year and this number can easily cross the $1 billion  mark by the end of the year. Half of this has been invested in the e-commerce sector. Sundeep Malhotra CEO, Home Shop 18, added to this by saying “Although capital and finance is readily available, lack of talent and infrastructure and logistics still pose a challenge, but the biggest challenge is the lack of credibility and trust. Companies need to build customer confidence for better acceptance of e-commerce.”

Gautam Gandhi, Head Business Development, Google India said “We play the role of an intermediary, we are all entering new territories and will witness how online and offline will meet each other in the near future.” Also speaking at the panel, Infibeam’s founder Vishal Mehta said “As a culture we foster innovation. E-commerce is about flawless execution, trust of consumers and there may be a lot of issues to simplify now.”

Discussing at length the challenges facing the ecosystem, B. Muralikrishnan, Country Manager, eBay India said “Scalability at various levels is the biggest challenge for Indian e-commerce.”

The second panel called ‘The Rise Of New E-commerce Categories: Can They Scale?’ was moderated by Vani Kola, MD, IndoUS Ventures with start-ups Inkfruit, Carat Lane, Babyoye and VC firm Sequoia Capital participating. “Value on delivery has to be taken care of: it is mandatory for all the e-commerce companies to make it a priority,” said Kashyap Dalal, CEO, Inkfruit. Vani Kola predicted that “There will be one or more $1 billion exits in India by 2012.”

The panel titled ‘What attracts large retailers to the game’ saw Future Group, Tata-owned Infiniti Retail and Bombay Stores participating in a riveting discussion moderated by Mahesh Murthy, Partner Seedfund. Kashyap Mehta, Head of E-commerce, Infiniti Retail Ltd, said, “Retailers go online to increase their reach, since it provides more access and also as it offers a convenient channel to do both discovery and research online. They can set up a multi-channel to tap various cycles of a consumer transaction.” Rajiv Prakash, Advisor- Digital Businesses to the Future Group, said that Future Bazaar was using the web, mobile and telephones as digital channels to reach out to users. “Our idea is to take a digital commerce approach and we will use digital influences from increasing awareness through marketing to online research when information in stores is unavailable. Digital is important in enabling conversations.”

Bombay Stores’ CEO Anagg Desai said it is a “no option, no brainer” choice for offline players seeking to go online. “It’s like going on Facebook,” he said.  Wherever it brings relevance to introduce an offline play, like travel sites and matrimonial sites, e-commerce stories will also set up kiosks and stores, he added.

In the last panel on ‘E-Commerce Ecosystem: Infrastructure Enablers and Service Providers’, which was moderated by Alok Mittal, MD of Canaan Partners India,  the discussion revolved around the readiness of the ecosystem and the main challenges being faced by the back-end players.

Pawan Gadia, the head of e-commerce of Ferns n Petals, a flower retail chain, said that he is targeting a Rs 30 crore turnover. “Technology challenges still rule with bandwidth and hosting still being very expensive. Quality analytics is still too prohibitively priced. There is a lot of customised per vendor required when it comes to technology,” said Gadia.
