History wrapped in the layers of cakes

With flour, sugar, milk, butter, eggs, and flavors arise the loveliest thing called cake. The most nascent people of the world started making cakes shortly after discovering. If we see the literature or writings from medieval period in England, we find mention of bread-like cakes. In fact, those cakes  can be called as sweets made with flour and not cakes in the real sense.

Flipping through the pages of history, we can say that it was only after industrial revolution that cakes became immensely popular all over the world. The simple reason was “ with the industrial revolution, baking dishes and other utensils were made available in the market and that too at an affordable range. Gradually, baking soda, leaving agents, flavoring agents were also invented and our world of cakes went on becoming a gorgeous one.
Have a look at some of the world famous cakes and its place of origin in the following paragraphs:

Angel Food Cake: In a very general term, an Angel Food Cake is a soft and spongy cake that is made with egg whites, flour, and sugar. It has a very spongy texture due to a very good whipping of the egg whites. Many historians are of the belief that it originated in Afro-American regions. And perhaps the Afro-Americans were the enunciators of this wonderful cake. A large amount of labor was required to whip the egg whites and Africans being the sturdy ones could do that without any hassle. Another belief is that an Angel cake is another take on the sponge cake, cornstarch cake, snow drift cake, and silver cake. History also says that it was as early as 1800 A.D. when Angel Food Cake took birth in some South Eastern Pennsylvania that produces the majority of the cake molds.

German Chocolate Cake: Before going into the pages of history for German Chocolate Cake, you must know that 11th June is celebrated as the National German Chocolate Cake Day in the USA. So, you can celebrate this day by sending cakes to the USA to your friends and relatives staying there. Now, coming to the origin and story of German Chocolate Cake, let me clarify two facts: One, there is no breed of chocolate called German Chocolate. And secondly, no German immigrants ever introduced this cake to the USA. In fact, German Chocolate Cake has got no roots in Germany. Sweet chocolate, coconut, pecans were the original basic ingredients for this cake. The person who invented this wondrous cake was Sam German and he sold his recipe of a mild dark baking chocolate bar to Baker’s Chocolate Company in 1852. And this company honored the creator by naming it Baker’s German’s Sweet Chocolate. Then a century later in 1957, a Texas homemaker Mrs. George Calay’s recipe German’s chocolate cake was published in a Dallas Morning Star newspaper on 13th June and it was tagged as the “recipe of the day”. She must have used the Baker’s German’s Chocolate while baking the cake. Now, America found a new fascination in this cake. Even today, we see the apostrophe and the have been dropped, thus giving the false hint as for the origin of the cake.

Red Velvet Cake: First of all, please know that Devil’s Food Cake is what we call by the name of Red Velvet Cake today. The other names are Red Devils Cake, Waldorf Astoria Cake, and $100 Dollar Cake. Now, what is a devil? Is it some unfriendly thing? No, it is a term that describes any form of food that is rich, dark, chocolaty, and sharply tangy as a devil. The term devil or devil’s dates back to 18th Century. Now, coming to our cake, we all love this wonderful mild chocolate red colored cake. The red color is actually used of beetroot color, at least in history that was how people got the red color. But now, so many food colors are available. The thick white frosting and layering are still retained just like the yesteryears. This cake gained immense popularity after being featured in the American cookbook called Mrs. Rorer’s New Cook Book by Sarah Tyson Rorer in the year 1902. Some people believe that this cake originated in Waldorf Astoria Hotel in the 1950’s. But the hotel is unable to produce any records of that so we cannot be sure. Another belief is that, in the 1940’s, a lady customer asked for the recipe from the hotel owners and she was given the recipe in return of $100. She then started circulating the recipe and named it $100 cake.

Black Forest Cake: Perhaps, this is the most famous cake in the world. Everyone loves it and I can still have this cake for all my occasions without being bored. Returning to the pages of history, Black Forest cake is believed to have originated in the late 16th Century in the Black Forest Region. In German, this region is named Der Schwarzwald and this term Schwarzwald conjures obscurity and clandestine waving from the romantic German concept of forest-loneliness. This was the time when chocolates were first introduced into cakes and cookies. This region is also famous for some cherries which is combined in this cake beautifully. In the year, 1949 this cake was ranked as the 13th best-known cake in Germany. It may have originated in Germany, but people across the world loves it immensely.

Tiramisu Cake: The name is Italian and it means carry me up. Traditionally, tiramisu is a pudding-like dessert made up of a sponge cake or ladyfinger dipped in a liqueur and later layered with chocolate flakes and rich custard. Initially, it used to be made with loose custard but now mascarpone cheese has replaced it. There is a historical myth associated with this famous cake. In the North West region of Tuscany, Italy lies Siena where a dessert similar to Tiramisu was made in honor of Grand Duke Cosimo de Medici III (1642-1723) and was named the Duke’s Soup. He liked that really very much and brought that recipe with him to Florence. The English men staying in Florence fell in love with this cake and later they took it to England where its popularity grew larger.
So, see, it just takes one minute to have a piece of cake and fall in love with it. Now, there are so many baking equipments available and thus baking has never been what you can call it, a smooth piece of cake! You can come up with your own recipes and serve the world with a sweet dish.
